Daisy came to Green Acres Farm Sanctuary when her caretaker had to escape a violent marriage. For victims of domestic violence trying to leave abusive homes means facing the challenge of not only finding shelter for themselves and their children, but also for their pets. And when your pet is a horse, finding shelter can be extremely difficult. We were glad to be able to provide Daisy with a loving home and give her former caretaker a chance to seek safety with peace of mind.
This sweet 8-year-old gelding we named Sterling was discarded at an auction and on his way to the slaughter. When he was rescued and brought to Green Acres Farm Sanctuary in March of 2016, he was almost 300 lbs. underweight with a body score of 1.5 out of 5. It took months of special feed, proper veterinary care, and lots of love to get Sterling back in healthy shape. We are grateful he was saved, and we are honored to watch Sterling blossom Every year approximately 130,00 horses are bought in the United States and shipped to Canada and Mexico for slaughter.
Festus is a feisty but still very lovable donkey. He likes getting his ears scratched and enjoys carrots. Because of prior abuse, Festus is still leery of adults, but he is trusting of kids. Festus had been deemed not adoptable and would have been euthanized when we were contacted. Green Acres Farm Sanctuary helped to give him a safe home where he could be himself.
