In the wild sheep would grow just enough wool to protect themselves from the cold and than naturally shed their wool never needing human intervention. Unfortunately today’s domesticated sheep have been selectively bred by humans to continuously produce wool that grows longer faster in order to increase profits. This unnatural overload of wool can cause heat exhaustion, maggot infestation and the extra weight can decrease the sheep’s mobility. So every spring we have to shear our sheep to keep them comfortable in the hotter months.
